We were loved, because we had the credentials, the money and a war in Vietnam as the basis for Revolution. I did take a minute or two for practical calculation on the savings available with a motorcycle. It was mostly on transportation, doing away with the need for train tickets or wasting time hitchhiking. I also factored a rare chance in life: before me sat a dream come true, so I woke up and lived it. That Lightning Rocket was a glowing opportunity easily realized. I would ride it five thousand miles and know it intimately.

He would take the train since he’d budgeted that part of it in his $5 a day. And he liked the train, always had, after all. And that was that. We parted company the next morning with a handshake and an agreement to meet up again, somewhere, maybe. I still marvel at the image of myself, alone on a BSA Lightning Rocket, maneuvering Paris. My motorcycle experience to date was the ride from London, plus a few miles on borrowed Hondas, plus about two hundred more miles on a Honda Dream. I would have gone farther on the Dream, but it kept breaking down.

Others observed, apart, sticking a left foot in, pulling a left foot out, but not quite jumping to the full Hokey Pokey. From those same sidelines they still observe, some with superiority, confirmed by success. Tom Brokaw, a cultural clarion claiming that the WWII years framed the best generation, regretted “the 60s” as a lost opportunity. He dismissed the idealism of “the 60s” as a failed promise, a fantasy unrealized and unworkable in the world at large.
